Got Insulin was created by Zoe Mattsson on 01/09 2013. Got Insulin will provide support, education and finance for youths struggling with Type 1 Diabetes.
Mission
Got Insulin aims to work with the community of Type 1 Diabetics and their families/friends. Got Insulin will provide support, education and finance for those struggling with the disease.
We hope to hold annual events with all profits going towards charities associated with Type 1 Diabetes and individuals/families who are struggling.
Our main focus is to raise awareness and understanding for those who suffer from Type 1 Diabetes. Creating awareness in the general public about how serious this disease can be is currently at the top of our agenda.
Description
Got Insulin started as a one off charity auction with all profits donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
The original event was such a success that Zoe Mattsson a Type 1 Diabetes sufferer for 16 years decided to start her own non-profit organisation.
The vision for Got Insulin is to create more awareness and understanding for the general public in regards to Type 1 Diabetes and the short and long term complications.
Type 1 Diabetes was previously known as Juvenile Diabetes. T1 Diabetes is where cells in the pancreas are being attacked by other cells in the body. This then stops the body from creating insulin.
T1 Diabetes is an auto-immune disease and in most cases is genetic. T1 Diabetes can lead to heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation and many other serious medical problems. T1 Diabetes is commonly diagnosed in children and teenagers.
T1 Diabetes requires you to have insulin injections to survive. There is no magic tablet, exercise and diet and weight loss will not cure T1 Diabetes. Insulin injections are essential. There is no cure and there is also no prevention for T1 Diabetes. You are born with it. You can not stop it happening. You can not make it go away.
Most people don't understand the serious complications involved with T1 Diabetes.
At 17 years old Zoe had cataract surgery on both her eyes. For the last 11 years she has been and will forever be legally blind. She was admitted to hospital 11 times suffering from ketoacidosis before the age of 19. So if you break that down, 5 years of poor-average blood sugar control = blind. That is a scary fact. A scary fact that you've probably never heard about.
The driving factor for Zoe to start Got Insulin was realising that her story was not unique. Many teenagers and young adults rebel against T1 Diabetes. This is called Diabetes Burnout and it is much more common than Zoe ever imagined. Got Insulin will endeavour to educate youths and adults about the consequences of Diabetes Burnout and how it can permanently affect your life. Got Insulin will also raise funds to be donated to fellow T1 Diabetes affiliated charities and families.
Here at Got Insulin we will attempt to hold bi-annual events raising funds and awareness for T1 Diabetes. Every event will be different. More importantly every event will be amazing, entertaining and fun. Not your usual charity gigs.
Got Insulin hopes to reach a different, broader audience. The general public, not just the T1 Diabetic affected public.
We want you to come along for the ride...
